What to do and not what to do when your car overheats?

08 Sep 2025

We all know the UAE heat is unforgiving on humans and cars alike. If your temperature gauge surges into the red or a coolant warning flashes, don’t ignore those signs. You may be moments from a complete engine meltdown.

In this situation, you’ve got to take action quickly. And when you need repair components, European Autospares can help you identify the right items quickly so you are not stranded twice.

Signs your car is overheating

Spot these symptoms early and you can save your engine:

  • Temperature gauge creeping past the middle or spiking into the red.
  • Coolant warning light on the dash.
  • Steam or a sweet, hot smell from under the bonnet.
  •  A/C suddenly turning warm at idle.
  • Noticeable loss of power, pinging or ticking from the engine.
  • Heater blowing cold when it should be hot.
  • Fresh fluid under the car that looks green, pink or orange.

If you see any of the above signs, ease off the throttle and look for a safe place to stop. European Autospares can point you toward the likely culprits and how to confirm them.

What to do when your car overheats

1) Pull over safely and switch off.

Indicate, park somewhere secure, switch your hazards on, then shut the engine down.

Leave the bonnet closed until heat subsides.

2) Let it cool before you touch anything.

Cooling systems remain pressurised well after shutdown. Give it time to drop to safe levels.

3) Check the coolant reservoir only.

When there is no steam and the bay feels cooler, inspect the translucent expansion tank. Top up to the mark with premixed coolant or clean water if it is low.

4) Restart gently, if necessary.

If the gauge returns to normal and stays there, drive slowly to a trusted car repair Dubai workshop and ask for parts from European Autospares. If the needle rises again, stop and call for a recovery truck.

What not to do

  • Do not keep driving through the warning.
  • Do not open a hot radiator cap.
  • Do not pour cold water over a hot engine.
  • Do not assume the problem has fixed itself because the light went out.

When to choose recovery

Arrange a tow if your engine temperature gauge shows red for more than a few seconds, you see heavy steam escaping from the bonnet or the engine began to knock.

Spending on recovery and a small part now will be a lot cheaper than skimming a cylinder head and installing a new gasket later.

Why engines overheat here

Our high ambient temperatures and constant traffic expose weak links in your cooling system.

Typical causes include low coolant from a slow leak, a stuck thermostat, tired water pump, clogged radiator, inoperative electric fan or a blown fuse or relay. Dust and sand can also clog the radiator and A/C condenser, choking airflow.

Prevent it next time

  • Keep coolant at the correct level and the manufacturer-approved mix.
  • Inspect hoses, clamps and the pressure cap at every service; replace anything brittle, swollen or weeping.
  • Make sure the radiator fan cuts in at operating temperature; check fuses and relays if it does not.
  • Clear insects, dust and sand from radiator and condenser fins.
  • Pre-emptive replacement of an ageing thermostat and water pump before long summer trips is cheap insurance.

European Autospares can supply the correct cap rating, thermostat temperature and pump specification, and serve as a practical guide to spare parts for owners and workshops.

Fix it once, with parts that fit

Overheating repairs often need a variety of parts from thermostats to radiator hoses. This is where Spare parts compatibility matters.

Always match by VIN or OE number and check spare part compatibility with your supplier before you buy. If you are comparing car spare parts Dubai options or searching for “auto parts near me” on your phone, European Autospares will help you pick the correct spec first time, every time.

Prefer to collect in person? If you need car replacement parts in Al Quoz, the counter team can show you options and confirm fitment on the spot. Running a garage elsewhere in the Emirates? As auto spares UAE specialists, European Autospares ships quickly so you get the exact auto repair parts in UAE you need without delay.

Let European Autospares cool you down

Stay calm, stop safely, let it cool, and resist opening anything hot. Check only the coolant reservoir, then drive gently to a workshop or call recovery. Your next step is to diagnose the root cause and fit quality, compatible parts.

With European Autospares on your side for sourcing and verification, you turn a stressful roadside moment into a long lasting repair.
