What does a suspension dust boot do?

It covers the shock absorber's polished piston rod, keeping dust, grit and water away from the rod and its oil seal. Without it, contaminants score the rod and destroy the seal, causing the damper to leak and fail — a cheap boot protects an expensive shock absorber.
